The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed that the Patient Support Programme would initially be implemented through selected hospitals strategically distributed nationwide to guarantee equitable access to healthcare support.
According to him, patients seeking assistance under the fund cannot apply directly at the secretariat, as all applications must be initiated digitally through specialist clinicians at approved hospitals.
He explained that the process was designed to ensure dignity, efficiency and proper medical assessment before support is granted to eligible patients.
“To benefit from support under the Trust Fund, an applicant must meet three basic eligibility requirements. The applicant must be a Ghanaian citizen, an active NHIS card bearer, and must have a medical condition that falls within the approved conditions supported under the Fund,” he stated in a Facebook post.
Among the major referral facilities selected for the programme are the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital and Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
Other regional and specialist facilities enlisted include the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Centre, 37 Military Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and Eastern Regional Hospital.
The list also includes municipal and faith-based health facilities such as Holy Family Hospital, Baptist Medical Centre, Goaso Municipal Hospital and Bole Municipal Hospital.
Additional facilities selected under the first phase are Volta Regional Hospital, Northern Regional Hospital, Upper West Regional Hospital, Upper East Regional Hospital, Kumasi South Hospital, Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Sefwi-Wiawso Government Hospital and Worawora Government Hospital.
Private health facilities participating in the programme include The Bank Hospital, Trust Specialist Hospital, International Maritime Hospital and Aisha Hospital.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the arrangement would allow specialist clinicians to assess patients and submit applications through a dedicated digital platform rather than requiring patients to physically visit the secretariat to seek financial assistance.
The Mahama Cares initiative forms part of government efforts to expand access to healthcare support for Ghanaians facing critical medical conditions while strengthening coordination between public and private health facilities nationwide.
