Kwame Obeng Asare, popularly known as A Plus, is a controversial public personality and political analyst who has made shocking statements about the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) position on the Anti-LGBT+ Bill.
A Plus claims that although while NDC MPs are currently pleading with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sign the bill into law, the party might retract its support once in government.
Speaking on the United Showbiz program that airs on UTV monitored by News & Vibes, A Plus expressed doubts about the NDC’s willingness to implement the bill, implying that if they take office, they might come up with reasons not to sign it. Such political behavior, he said, is normal.
The remarks made by A Plus coincide with increased public pressure on President Akufo-Addo to sign the Anti-LGBT+ Bill, which seeks to criminalize and ban LGBT-related activities and their promotion.
The measure was approved by Ghana’s Parliament on February 28, 2024, and is technically called as the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Family Values measure.
In order to wait for the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the bill’s validity, President Akufo-Addo has chosen not to sign it. Should the bill become law, those who participate in or advocate for LGBT activities might face prison sentences of up to five years.
