Proceed with approval of ministers – Dame to Bagbin

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has countered the suspension of ministerial and deputy ministerial nominee approvals by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, asserting that Parliament can proceed with the approval processes.

Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Etse K. Dafeamekpor, filed an interlocutory injunction at the Supreme Court, which prompted Bagbin to decide to stop considering nominees.

Bagbin suspended Parliament’s authority to approve new ministers appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a result of the injunction.

The president’s instruction, which cited a pending interlocutory application at the Supreme Court, ordered Parliament not to send the Bill on Human Sexual Rights and Family Values for President Akufo-Addo’s assent, which sparked the suspension.

Godfred Yeboah Dame, in reaction to Bagbin’s conduct, nevertheless, stressed that Parliament may carry out the approval procedures without jeopardizing the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.

Dame maintained that the constitutionally mandated procedure for approving new nominations was unaffected by Dafeamekpor’s lawsuit contesting the President’s authority to remove and reassign ministries.
