In a chilling incident yesterday at a UBA bank branch in Dadin Kowa, Jos, Nigeria, a potentially catastrophic situation was narrowly averted when a young man, identified as ‘Michael’, attempted a suicide bombing.
The would-be bomber, armed with a fake explosive device, demanded a ransom of 100 million Naira from bank staff under the threat of detonation.
Eyewitnesses report that Michael joined the queue like any other customer before passing a note to the teller, revealing his deadly intentions. In a remarkable display of composure and professionalism, bank staff swiftly alerted authorities while maintaining the appearance of cooperation with the perpetrator.
As the situation unfolded, the bank discreetly facilitated the evacuation of customers, ensuring their safety while engaging with Michael to stall for time. Meanwhile, security forces were summoned to the scene.
Upon their arrival, a tense standoff ensued. Security personnel fired a warning shot, prompting Michael to flee outside, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device strapped to his body. Panic briefly gripped the area as bystanders and security personnel scrambled for cover.
However, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the purported bomb was nothing more than a crude imitation, constructed from plastic and cellotape. Authorities swiftly apprehended Michael, leading to his interrogation.
During questioning, the suspect revealed that he hails from Edo State and had recently arrived in Jos. A subsequent search of his residence in the staff college uncovered an alarming array of makeshift weapons and materials, including machetes, plastics, and cellotape.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and raised questions about the motives behind the attempted attack. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine any possible links to extremist groups or individuals.
