Tragedy struck at Kumasi-Abrepo Junction last Friday, May 17, 2024, when a private vehicle with the registration number GS 9494-21 lost control and hit five people, resulting in the death of a female community police officer and injuring four others, including another police officer. The incident, captured by CCTV footage, has shocked the community and raised concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance.
Witnesses reported that the female police officer, alongside a fellow officer, was managing traffic at the junction due to a malfunctioning traffic light. Eyewitnesses claimed that the private vehicle’s brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control and plow into the group of individuals at the intersection.
The deceased officer has been identified as Officer Akwesiwaa Mensah, a respected member of the community police force. Her colleague, whose name has not been released, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. The other three victims, who were pedestrians, also suffered varying degrees of injuries and are being treated.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, focusing on the vehicle’s maintenance records and the circumstances leading up to the brake failure. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver of the vehicle will be questioned once they are medically cleared.
