Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu, has appealed to former President John Mahama to remember the support he received from the movie industry during his campaign when elected a president in the 2024 election.
Speaking at an event, Kwaku Manu noted that the industry, which is predominantly Akan-speaking, is not a stronghold of the NDC, making it risky for actors to openly endorse the party.
He revealed that many actors who openly supported Mahama suffered losses, including the loss of capital. Kwaku Manu, however, expressed his personal admiration for Mahama, describing him as the only President who showed him kindness and respect.
The actor also lamented the challenges faced by the movie industry in Ghana, citing restrictions on filming at the Jubilee House and difficulties in obtaining permission to use police stations and weapons as props. He contrasted this with the ease of taking pictures at the White House in America.
“NDC have their stronghold in the Volta and Northern Region. We (Kumawood industry) speak the Akan language which is not an NDC zone. The moment you lay bare your affiliation, your career will be at stake… Please don’t forget these people who have openly endorsed you when you come to power. Many of them have lost their capital.”
“We don’t have the industry anymore in Ghana. We are not allowed to take pictures of the Jubilee House but when we get to America, we take pictures of the White House. Our producers are denied permission to use police stations, weapons and others for our job.”
As Ghana prepares for the pivotal December 7, 2024, election, John Dramani Mahama is poised to make a political comeback, seeking to revive trust in the country’s democratic system. His campaign is built on populist promises, including legalizing Okada operations.
Mahama vehemently critiques the current administration, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia, for their alleged mismanagement of the economy and governance failures.
He stresses the need for genuine accountability, arguing that the same party and officials responsible for the country’s current challenges cannot be trusted to rectify them. Mahama pledges to provide visionary leadership, distinguishing himself from the perceived incompetence of the ruling NPP party.
