The youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently condemned the alleged assault on a student leader by bodyguards of former President John Dramani Mahama, labeling it as “barbaric” and “uncivilized”.
In a statement released, the NPP youth wing expressed shock and outrage over the incident, which occurred at the Christian Service University College during a lecture by Mahama. The student, Nana Boakye, was reportedly physically assaulted by Mahama’s bodyguards for expressing his opinions.
The NPP youth wing described the incident as “most barbaric and uncivilized” and accused Mahama’s security team of “thuggery” and “hooliganism”. They demanded an unqualified apology from Mahama and his assistance in arresting the perpetrators.
The statement also questioned Mahama’s respect for students and the youth, saying “We are waiting to see if John Mahama has any respect for the students of Ghana and the youth in general by his action or inaction.”
The NPP youth wing’s condemnation adds to the growing chorus of voices speaking out against political violence and intimidation in Ghana. Their strong stance reflects the growing demand for leaders to take responsibility for the actions of their supporters and security personnel.
By labeling the assault as “barbaric”, the NPP youth wing is emphasizing the gravity of the incident and calling for a strong response to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
According to reports the student shouted “You are a liar, You will lose the 2024 elections” while Mahama was delivering a lecture at the university.
