Veteran highlife artiste Rex Omar has issued a stern warning to aspiring musicians in Ghana, advising them against pursuing a career in music in the country. According to Omar, the industry is plagued by systemic challenges and disappointment, making it difficult for artistes to achieve mainstream success.
In an interview with Accra-based 3FM monitored by News & Vibes, Omar shared his personal experiences and the harsh realities of the music industry in Ghana. He revealed that despite his talent and dedication, he has faced numerous challenges, including lack of support from the government and neglect from the industry.
Omar’s advice is a stark contrast to the usual encouragement given to aspiring musicians. However, he believes that his experiences and the truth about the industry will help young artistes make informed decisions about their careers.
“I wouldn’t advise my children to pursue music in Ghana,” Omar said emphatically. “The industry will disappoint you. I’ve been there, done that, and I know what it takes to succeed. But the support system is not there, and it’s tough.”
Omar’s comments have sparked a debate in the music industry, with some agreeing with his views and others disagreeing. However, his warning serves as a wake-up call for the industry to address its challenges and provide support for its creatives.
The question remains: will Rex Omar’s advice deter aspiring musicians, or will they be determined to prove him wrong? Only time will tell.
