Actress Lydia Forson has taken to social media to demand apologies from media houses that reported on Chef Ebenezer Smith’s fake Guinness World Records certificate.
In a fiery post, Forson stated, “I expect EVERY SINGLE MEDIA HOUSE that posted the story about Chef Smith to apologize to the public!! Don’t just delete or stay quiet, apologize! If you’re going to hold politicians accountable, you should start with yourselves.”
Forson’s comments come after Chef Smith was exposed for presenting a fake GWR certificate, claiming a record for the longest cooking marathon. The certificate was later confirmed to be a fabrication by GWR officials.
Forson’s call for accountability has sparked a heated debate in the media industry, with many agreeing that media houses should take responsibility for spreading false information.
The incident has also raised questions about the credibility of media sources and the importance of fact-checking in journalism.
On July 2, 2024, Chef Smith hosted a press conference at the Labadi Beach Hotel, announcing himself as the new record holder and sending waves of excitement throughout Ghana, with many offering congratulations. However, the celebration was short-lived, as doubts soon arose questioning the authenticity of the certificate he presented during the event, casting a shadow of uncertainty over his achievement.
Chef Smith undertook a remarkable culinary feat at Amadia Shopping Centre in Spintex, Accra, cooking continuously from February 1, 2024, to March 6, 2024 – a staggering 35 days. Despite initially targeting a 360-hour marathon, he impressively exceeded it by over 400 hours, equivalent to 21 days. His endeavor concluded on March 6.
This attempt followed Chef Failatu Abdul Razak’s unsuccessful bid to surpass Alan Fisher’s record of 119 hours and 57 minutes, set in November 2023. The culinary world had been abuzz with anticipation, especially after Nigerian chef Hilda Baci broke the record in June with a time of 93 hours and 11 minutes, outdoing India’s Lata Tondon’s previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes. However, Chef Fisher raised the bar even higher with his record-breaking 119 hours and 57 minutes in November.
