Gospel singer Celestine Donkor shared the emotional story of her difficult upbringing during an interview on ‘Just Being Us’ with MzGee.
Growing up with 14 siblings in a small, overcrowded space, she recalled the many hardships her family faced, with all of them living together in a single room.
Despite these challenges, Celestine painted a picture of resilience and unity in her family.
Living in a compound house, shared by 11 other households, added to their daily struggles. Her parents, despite having very little, worked hard to provide for the entire family.
One memory that stood out was how their meager meals always managed to stretch far enough to feed all 15 children.
Celestine referred to this as the “miracle pot,” symbolizing the strength and determination of her mother, who engaged in petty trading to ensure there was something for everyone to eat.
Even though the family didn’t have much, their close bond and the constant efforts of her mother to make ends meet left a deep impression on Celestine.
She also reflected on the cramped conditions in the house, often sleeping on a couch, and how, despite the difficult circumstances, the love within their family made their home one filled with faith and gratitude.
This story of her past, filled with sacrifice and perseverance, played a vital role in shaping Celestine’s faith and success, driving her forward in both her personal life and career as a gospel musician.
