The critically acclaimed artist, Black Sherif, who has been showered with numerous accolades, has recently emerged as a prominent voice denouncing the harmful practice of illegal mining, also referred to as Galamsey.
At the recently held Tidal Rave event hosted at the prestigious La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Black Sherif captivated the audience with his performance, briefly pausing to showcase compelling visuals depicting the devastating impacts caused by galamsey activities on the environment.
With his growing influence and reach, the talented “Kwaku the Traveller” artist is utilizing his platform to shed light on the dangers associated with illegal mining, joining the ranks of other well-known figures who have expressed concerns about the environmental degradation resulting from such activities.
In a significant development, the government has initiated the process of rescinding the Legislative Instrument (L.I) that grants authorization for mineral mining operations within various forest reserves.
A communication addressed to the Clerk of Parliament, dated October 10, by the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, underscores the urgency for the laying of a new LI to effect the revocation.
This move comes on the heels of mounting pressure from stakeholders, including a coalition of research scientists affiliated with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), who have been vehemently advocating for the legislative repeal.
These stakeholders have pointed out that the existing law has led to a significant reduction in the country’s forest cover, highlighting the necessity for swift and decisive action to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources.
