A Nigerian man, identified as Osang, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
The arrest was made on Friday, December 6, 2024, upon Osang’s arrival from the United States.
According to the EFCC, Osang is alleged to have defrauded 139 Australians of a staggering $AUD8,000,000 (approximately ₦2.9 billion) through a fake cryptocurrency investment platform called Liquid Asset Group.
The suspect allegedly lured his victims on social media, promising them unrealistic returns on their investments. The EFCC has stated that Osang will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
This arrest serves as a reminder of the growing threat of cryptocurrency scams and the importance of exercising caution when investing in online platforms.
The EFCC’s efforts to combat financial crimes and bring perpetrators to justice are commendable, and this arrest is a significant step in that direction.
As the investigation unfolds, more details about the scope and nature of the scam are expected to emerge.
For now, the arrest of Osang serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit others through fraudulent means.
