Nigerian market closed over prostitution and homosexuality scandal
The Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in Kano State in NIgeria has been closed indefinitely due to allegations of prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral activities.
The market, which was previously a hub for tomato trading, has been embroiled in controversy after reports emerged of illicit activities taking place within its premises.
According to sources, some youths and married women were engaging in prostitution and other immoral acts at the market, prompting the local council to intervene and shut down the market.
Council Chairman Aminu Kadawa confirmed the closure, stating that the market would remain shut until further notice.
The closure has been supported by the Commissioner of Tourism and Management, Aisha Saji, who recalled previous efforts to address similar issues at the market. During her tenure as Commissioner for Women Affairs, she led a raid on the market, resulting in the arrest of 43 individuals for prostitution and the illegal sale of alcohol.
The incident has sparked a heated debate in the community, with some residents applauding the closure and others expressing concerns about the economic implications.
The market’s closure is expected to pave the way for a skills development institution to be established in the area, aimed at reducing unemployment and providing sustainable livelihoods for youths.
