A Nigerian man, Makinde Emmanuel Opeyemi, is facing deportation after discovering that a woman was fraudulently added to his UK visa application as his wife—without his knowledge.
Makinde had paid ₦20 million to a travel consultant, Shitta Waliu Aderibigbe, owner of Fanzine Educational Consultants, to help secure his UK student visa.
After successfully relocating, he later attempted to renew his visa and bring his actual partner to the UK. That was when the shocking truth came to light.
The UK Home Office flagged his application, asking for details about his “wife,” Dolapo Afusat Yusuf—someone Makinde had never heard of.
Official records showed that he had entered the UK with a dependent spouse, a claim backed by forged marriage documents.
These forgeries were so convincing that UK immigration authorities had no reason to doubt them.
As a result, Makinde’s student visa was revoked, and he has been under investigation for immigration fraud.
He lost his job in October 2024, has spent over £20,000 in legal fees trying to clear his name, and is now at risk of being deported—or even jailed—for a crime he never committed.
Back in Nigeria, Aderibigbe was reported to the police and briefly arrested, but he allegedly bribed his way out and remains free. Meanwhile, Makinde’s life has been turned upside down, pushing him into depression.
The case has sparked outrage, with many questioning how such a serious fraud was able to pass through UK immigration checks unnoticed.
It also raises concerns about corruption within Nigeria’s law enforcement, as the alleged fraudster remains unpunished while his victim suffers the consequences.
