A local farmer named Ebenezer Lativi and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) office in Assin North worked together to save a wounded hawk that was thought to have journeyed from Brussels, Belgium, to Ghana for reasons only the bird knew.
Elisher Sarpong, the Deputy NADMO Director for Assin North, told Adom News that the bird had wounds on both wings, suggesting that it may have been shot or subjected to another serious attack.
Ebenezer Lativi, a young farmer, claims that he was alarmed when he first saw bloodstains on leaves on his property. He found the bleeding bird with a metal ring around its leg after looking around.
The ring’s inscription, “BRUSSELS” with identification code H220252, contains links to the Brussels Museum of Natural Sciences and the www.ring.ac website.
Before being moved to the Kumasi Zoo for safekeeping, the bird was first brought to the Assin North veterinary officer for medical attention. After the rescue, the community was said to be shocked. While some locals joked that the bird was on a “special mission” from Europe, others conjectured that it was keeping an eye on the NPP presidential primaries. However, residents who held similar views chose not to speak on camera.
