Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has disclosed that his monthly salary as a parliamentarian is far less than what he used to earn in a single day as a private citizen.
Speaking in an interview with Adom FM, A Plus lamented that after all deductions, he takes home GHC 15,000 monthly, an amount he considers inadequate for the workload of MPs.
He expressed surprise at the financial constraints of the role, admitting that he previously had a different perception of parliamentarians before joining the legislature.
Reflecting on his past earnings, the former musician and political activist stated that 2020 was particularly lucrative for him, with his daily income surpassing his current parliamentary salary. He even hinted at making his bank statements public to support his claim.
A Plus believes MPs deserve more recognition for their work, as their remuneration does not match the demands of the job. Having spent years as a fierce critic of politicians, he now acknowledges the financial realities they face and understands why they advocate for better conditions.
“Our salaries are too little. After all deductions are made, we are left with Ghc 15,000. It’s not good.”
“When I look at my turnover for 2020, one of these days I’ll make my bank statement public…the amount of money I was making in a day was more than my entire salary as an MP.”
