The Director of the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, Dr Fred Adomako-Boateng, has identified Clinical Mentorship Strategy as key to reducing maternal mortality.

During a courtesy call on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, on April 22, 2026, Dr Adomako-Boateng said collaborative investigations have exposed the cause of high maternal mortality.

“The GHS, in collaboration with private and public entities, investigated the causes of maternal deaths in the region. The findings showed that most of the region’s top doctors are concentrated at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.”

To address this, he announced plans to roll out a Clinical Mentorship Strategy to enhance the skills and knowledge of health care practitioners in other cities through practical training and consultation.

Under this initiative, he said KATH specialists will visit district facilities like Ejura, Tepa, and Mampong to assist with delivery complications.

The Regional Director presented documentation on the strategy to the Asantehene.

Medical Store Expansion
Dr Adomako-Boateng further sought the assistance of the Asantehene to expand the Regional Medical Store, built in 1972.

According to him, the facility was built at a time the Region had a population of one million, noting that it stands inadequate for the current population of about five million.

“Medicine is central to our mandate. We request a space to expand,” he told Otumfuo.

Oxygen Plant Ready for Commissioning
The Regional Health Director also announced the provision of a transformer to power an oxygen plant established at Tafo with the assistance of UNICEF.

He reported that the facility had been inoperable due to a lack of electricity supply.

“With Otumfuo’s intervention, a transformer has been secured through ECG and VRA. Setup is ongoing and will be completed in two weeks.”

He humbly invited the Asantehene to grace the commissioning.

Specialist Hospitals Plan
Also featured in his briefing were updates on the development of specialist hospitals with Tepa Hospital being designated as a urology centre, Fomena Hospital as a fertility and reproductive centre, and Konongo and Kumawu Hospitals as trauma and accident centres.

He said a strategic plan for the project had been developed and is being finalised.

“Once complete, it will be presented to Otumfuo for his blessings before implementation.”
