Ghana’s next boxing export to the global stage is gathering pace, with Michael Abban declaring his readiness for elite competition after another emphatic victory—and setting his sights firmly on a shot at the WBC International title.

The 22-year-old, nicknamed “Black Spider”, delivered a statement performance at the “Resurrection Fight Night” at Laboma Beach last Sunday, stopping Benin’s Damien Zannou in the fifth round of a fiercely contested undercard bout.

From the opening bell, Abban imposed himself with sharp movement, relentless pressure and punishing body work, gradually breaking down a resilient opponent who had arrived with just one previous defeat on his record.

Zannou, 28, attempted to use his natural size advantage as a super bantamweight and responded with bursts of combinations, but Abban’s slick defensive work and evasive movement kept the home crowd roaring throughout.

The decisive moment came in the fifth round when the Ghanaian seized control, trapping Zannou mid-ring and unloading a barrage of body shots.

The Beninois collapsed, clutching his right arm, and was unable to continue after sustaining an injury from the sustained assault.

The victory marked Abban’s fifth straight win—and his 14th overall—since his only career setback in Tanzania in October 2024, further strengthening his growing reputation as one of Ghana’s brightest young prospects.

Already the WBA Africa super flyweight champion, a title he claimed on New Year’s Day (2026), Abban also holds the Commonwealth Youth and Silver belts—credentials that now underpin his push for global recognition.

And his next target is clear: Charlie Edwards, the WBC International super flyweight champion, who captured the belt with victory over Mexico’s Salvador Juarez in Dublin last September.

“Congratulations to Michael for the fantastic victory. It once again affirms my confidence in him,” said his manager, Anthony Kermah.

“He proved that he is ready for the international stage, and the WBC International champ, Charlie Edwards, is on his radar. We are ready to take him down. My boy is highly motivated.”

Beyond Edwards, Abban’s camp is also eyeing a potential clash with Commonwealth champion Matt MacHale—a logical next step, given the Ghanaian’s current Silver and Youth titles in the division.
