Former Awutu Senya East legislator Mavis Hawa Koomson is calling on current MP Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor and her campaign team to take responsibility for accusations made against her surrounding a fatal clash during the 2024 parliamentary election. She insists that recent disclosures from security authorities have proven that she played no part in the violence.
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, while presenting updates on election-related investigations on November 4, 2025, revealed that accounts given by individuals linked to the Awutu Senya East disturbance could not confirm the involvement of the newly-elected MP. The minister noted that Naa Koryoo reportedly distanced herself from the confrontation, stating she was not present when the shooting occurred — an event that resulted in the death of Yusif Larri Idriss. The individuals suspected of firing from a Mahindra pickup have refused to cooperate with investigators, with one allegedly flown out of the country for treatment.
Following this update, Hawa Koomson said she suffered direct consequences from claims made against her during the campaign period, including a violent attack during the Ablekuma North by-election. According to her, the assault nearly cost her life and was fueled by the widespread perception that she engineered the election-day tragedy.
The former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development stated that she has consistently denied any involvement and now feels fully vindicated by the latest investigative details. She believes the MP and her supporters unfairly weaponized the incident to discredit her politically. She maintains that those who spread the allegations owe her a public apology for the damage done to her reputation and the trauma she endured.
The conflict between the two politicians dates back to the night of the 2024 polls. A previous media interaction captured Naa Koryoo asserting that she and her followers were targeted by political opponents while monitoring polling activity. She claimed their convoy was fired upon, resulting in injuries to supporters and damage to a party vehicle. Those remarks heavily implicated Koomson at the time and became a central issue during the heated contest for the constituency.
Investigators continue to pursue individuals linked to the Mahindra pickup truck involved in the incident as efforts to establish a full account of events remain ongoing.
