The woman seen in a viral video being violently assaulted by her husband, John Odartey Lamptey, has revealed that she repeatedly sought help from both the Tesano and Ofankor Police Stations but received no intervention. Harriet Amuzu said she had lodged several complaints over ongoing abuse long before the latest attack captured public attention.
During an interview on TV3, monitored by GhanaWeb on November 20, 2025, she explained that she had previously gone to the Tesano Police Station to report severe physical abuse, including an incident where pepper was forcibly inserted into her private parts. She showed the officers her injuries and informed them that Lamptey had taken their two children, aged seven and two, into his custody. Although the police later invited him to the station, he reportedly destroyed her phone right in front of them. One of the officers eventually gave her money because she had nothing on her at the time.
The most recent assault, she said, began after Lamptey called her while she was attending a funeral, claiming their two-year-old child was critically ill. She rushed home only to realise the children were fine, and he later admitted he fabricated the emergency because he wanted sexual access to her. When she informed him that she planned to travel to her village the next morning, he became furious, accusing her of disrespect and claiming she had denied him intimacy for nearly five months. He then indicated he intended to harm her, insisting she had been trapped.
Lamptey told one of the children, Daniel, to escort the others outside, locked the door, and began assaulting her. He ripped her dress, undershorts, and waist beads, insisting she had no right to them. He then used the metal rod of a standing broom to strike her repeatedly and stepped on her as she lay on the floor.
The violence escalated when he picked up a knife and attempted to cut her hand. A neighbour known as Oketeku briefly intervened and managed to take the knife away. However, Lamptey allegedly ordered him to leave and continued the beating once the neighbour stepped out.
Harriet said the attack intensified when Lamptey rubbed pepper between her thighs and private parts before forcing himself on her.
