Three students of Academic City University have won the trophy in the Sustainable Packaging category at the 2026 WorldStar Global Packaging Awards, organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).
The team which included Mohammed Yasin Abdul Wahab, Sarah Akpedze Amewu, and Jeremy Acquaah, were recognised for their project, Eco Haven Waakye Packaging, which was focused on environmental sustainability, practicality, responsible packaging and global relevance.
The competition attracted 246 entries from 90 educational institutions across 23 countries, to reward talent in various aspects of packaging design and sustainability.
The award adds to Academic City’s growing success in innovation competitions as the institution had earlier placed first runner-up at the Royal Crown Packaging Competition, organised by Royal Crown Packaging Limited and the Institute of Packaging Ghana.
In a congratulatory message, the WPO commended Academic City University’s team’s work, saying it demonstrated global excellence in sustainable packaging.
Speaking on the achievement, the Vice-President for Institutional Advancement at Academic City University, Dr Lucy Agyepong, commended the students for their commitment and creativity.
Dr Agyepong said the achievement not only raised the profile of Ghanaian youth on the global stage, but also reflected the university’s strong commitment to sustainability and industry collaboration.
“Their achievement shows what Ghanaian youth can achieve when given the right opportunities and support. It also inspires the next generation to think beyond boundaries,” she added.
Competition
The national competition was held in 2025 using both online/remote submissions and physical engagements.
Student teams developed and submitted innovative packaging solutions, which were assessed by a panel coordinated by the Institute of Packaging Ghana.
Following the national competition, the Institute of Packaging Ghana submitted selected student innovations to the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) for international evaluation under the WorldStar STUDENT Awards.
The WPO then assessed submissions from multiple countries before announcing the 2026 award winners.
