Two people lost their lives, with five others sustaining injuries, following a road traffic accident at Third Ridge Junction, on the Accra–Cape Coast Highway.

The incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. yesterday.

Personnel from the Central Regional office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Cape Coast responded promptly to a distress call.

The casualties were conveyed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Briefing

The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOI Abdul Wasui Hudu, said the crash involved a Toyota Corolla with registration number: GW-5769-16, and a HOWO Tipper truck with the registration number: GN-1497-22.

He said the driver of the Toyota Corolla, who was trapped behind the steering wheel, was pulled out by personnel of the GNFS, but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to an eyewitness account, the Toyota Corolla was travelling from Cape Coast towards Accra.

The driver noticed a Pick-up vehicle that was dangerously overtaking and attempting to enter the lane of the oncoming HOWO Tipper truck.

The Corolla driver subsequently slowed down.

DOI Hudu said the Tipper truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction, veered into the outer lane to make way for the overtaking Pick-up vehicle.

However, in an attempt to return to its lane, the driver lost control and crashed into the Toyota Corolla.

Advice

The Central Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFO Merinder Mary Attigah-Mensah, who was at the scene, advised drivers on the road to be circumspect and ensure extra patience when driving.
