The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has expressed strong support for the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport, calling the move “long overdue.”
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the Minister said the renaming plan represents an important step toward reclaiming Ghana’s national symbols to reflect the country’s values and heritage.
“This is a welcome and long-overdue step. It is time we reclaim our national symbols to reflect our values and heritage,” he stated.
Armah-Kofi Buah highlighted that the current airport name is associated with a figure tied to the violent and unconstitutional overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. He argued that it is inappropriate to have the nation’s premier international gateway—often the first impression for visitors—linked to such a legacy.
The Minister described the proposed renaming to Accra International Airport as a move toward unity and a forward-looking national identity. “Renaming it to Accra International Airport is a move toward neutrality, unity, and a forward-looking national identity,” he said.
