Catholic priests in Accra are organizing a significant prayer walk on October 11, 2024, aimed at raising awareness and taking a stand against the growing threat of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
The walk will begin at 10 a.m. from the Cathedral and conclude at Christ the King Parish, marking a unified religious effort to address the environmental destruction caused by these illicit activities.
The initiative, led by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, seeks to draw attention to the severe damage galamsey is causing to Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.
By bringing together people from different communities and organizations, the prayer walk emphasizes the importance of collective responsibility in tackling this national crisis.
As part of the preparations, priests across Accra are expected to bus their congregants to the event, encouraging participation through announcements during their church services on October 6, 2024.
The walk will not only be a spiritual gathering but also serve as a platform for public demonstration against the environmental havoc wrought by galamsey.
More than 50 groups that have previously voiced concerns over illegal mining are set to join the event, amplifying the call for action.
The combined force of prayer and protest aims to push for concrete measures to end the devastation, stressing the importance of protecting Ghana’s natural resources and safeguarding the environment for future generations.
