Traffic on the Accra–Kumasi Highway came to a standstill on Tuesday after a severe gridlock forced police to divert vehicles through adjoining towns, a move that quickly triggered fresh congestion and frustration among commuters.
The gridlock, which stretched for several kilometres, left hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded for hours.
Police officers at the scene redirected traffic through alternative routes, including Amunua Praso and Amanfokrom, in an attempt to link vehicles back to Nkawkaw and decongest the main highway.
However, the diversion routes were soon overwhelmed by the volume of vehicles.
Traffic built up rapidly along the narrow roads, resulting in another round of bumper-to-bumper congestion.
Some drivers were forced to switch off their engines as tempers flared and travel times doubled.
“This diversion was supposed to help, but it only made things worse. We have been stuck here for hours without any clear direction,” one frustrated commuter told MyJoyOnline.
Several motorists blamed the situation on limited road capacity and the lack of advance notice about the diversion, saying the alternative routes were not suitable to handle such heavy traffic.
Police have since deployed additional officers along the affected routes to manage the situation and restore order. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to clear the main Accra–Kumasi Highway and normalise traffic flow.
Motorists have been urged to remain patient, comply with police directives, and plan their journeys carefully as work continues to resolve the traffic situation on one of the country’s busiest highways.
