Veteran Nollywood actor Kunle Afod has responded to ongoing rumors suggesting that actors and actresses in the Nigerian movie industry often exchange sex for roles. Speaking candidly during an interview on Rainbow Radio, Afod emphasized that talent remains the most critical factor in earning a place in any film project.
Afod addressed the controversial topic by saying that while some people might try to use personal appeal to advance their careers, anyone lacking acting ability is ultimately wasting their time. He pointed out that even if someone were to offer their body in hopes of being cast, producers would still bypass them if they lacked the skills needed for the role.
He drew comparisons between the entertainment industry and other professions, noting that romantic or flirtatious advances can happen anywhere—from schools to hospitals to banks—but it’s always a matter of personal choice and consent. According to Afod, adults make decisions, and whether someone agrees to such advances or not is up to them, not a fault of the industry.
He further explained that just like a football coach must choose from a pool of talented players, a producer is likely to have several capable actors to select from. Therefore, trying to bypass skill with seduction is a risky and often fruitless path.
Afod urged aspiring actors to focus on honing their craft instead of relying on shortcuts. He insisted that talent will always find its way to the spotlight, even if someone refuses to compromise themselves.
He concluded by highlighting the independence within the Nigerian film scene, encouraging individuals to take charge of their careers by creating their own opportunities—suggesting that everyone has the potential to produce their own films if they are truly passionate and prepared.
