Adwoa Safo Explains Why She Left Ghana for the US During Her Parliamentary Term

Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Honourable Sarah Adwoa Safo, has publicly addressed the reason behind her extended absence from Ghana, which sparked public backlash and dissatisfaction within her party.

In a heartfelt interview, Safo revealed that her decision to travel to the United States was driven by a family emergency involving her eldest son, who had fallen critically ill.

During the time she was serving as Minister for Gender and the sitting MP for Dome Kwabenya, Safo’s son’s health took a drastic turn for the worse, and he was on his deathbed.

The mother’s love and concern for her child led her to make the difficult choice to leave Ghana and travel abroad to care for him.

Speaking candidly on Okay Fm on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Safo shared the emotional toll the situation took on her, explaining that unlike in Ghana, where parental support for a sick child may not carry the same legal weight, the United States has strict child protection laws.

Safo noted that if she had failed to care for her son, the authorities could have intervened and even taken custody of her child.
