A tense moment unfolded in Parliament when Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin clashed with First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor during proceedings. The confrontation erupted as Afenyo-Markin was delivering a submission accusing the National Democratic Congress of inconsistency over its stance on the Hubtel software system. He argued that the NDC had rejected the platform while in opposition, only to continue using it now that they hold government power.

Just as he was driving home his point, Ahiafor—who was chairing the session—attempted to interject. The Minority Leader immediately reacted, visibly irritated by what he considered an unnecessary disruption. He argued that the Majority Leader had been given uninterrupted time to address the House, and he could not understand why the same courtesy was not being extended to him.

Afenyo-Markin’s tone grew sharper as he complained about what he described as a pattern of frequent interferences whenever the Minority side was speaking. To him, the Deputy Speaker’s attempt to cut in was part of an ongoing imbalance in how both sides of the House were treated.

Ahiafor, taken aback by the pushback, demanded clarification on what exactly the Minority Leader thought he had asked. But Afenyo-Markin maintained that the issue was simple: the Deputy Speaker had stepped in during his submission, something he insisted had not happened to the Majority Leader earlier.

The brief standoff highlighted rising tensions during the debate, with both leaders firmly standing their ground on how the proceedings should be conducted.
