President John Dramani Mahama has called on the global community to match climate action with climate justice, stressing that Africa continues to suffer the worst impacts of climate change despite contributing the least to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, President Mahama said no alliance of the future can afford to ignore the climate crisis, warning that climate change has become a defining global challenge with severe economic, environmental and social consequences.

“No alliance of the future can ignore the climate crisis. While Africa contributes the least to global emissions, it suffers disproportionately from climate impacts.

“Climate action must therefore be matched by climate justice, and the global community must honour its commitments on climate finance, adaptation support, and equitable energy transitions,” he stated.

President Mahama highlighted the Ghana–United Arab Emirates partnership as a practical example of how future-oriented global alliances can drive climate justice and sustainable development.

He noted that the partnership has mobilised a USD 30 million grant to support climate action initiatives, biodiversity protection and inclusive development in Ghana.

The President said such collaborations demonstrate how shared responsibility and mutual benefit can shape a more sustainable and resilient global future.

Africa is known to contribute a very small amount to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, estimated at only 2–4% of the global total, despite being home to roughly 17% of the world’s population.

The emissions are largely driven by fossil fuel combustion in a few countries, with South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria being the largest emitters.
