Legal representatives for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, and Akonta Mining Company have indicated plans to request a court order compelling the State to provide additional documents crucial for their defence.
The defence team claims that several essential materials were missing from the disclosures submitted by the prosecution. Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and Akonta Mining are facing charges for allegedly allowing mining activities on the Samreboi concession without the required government approvals.
During a case management session on Tuesday, November 25, lead defence counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi informed the court of their intention to file a formal motion seeking supplementary disclosures. The prosecution had earlier asserted that the documents filed on October 31 and November 11 constituted the full set of evidence it intended to use at trial.
Appiah-Kubi argued that while some documents may not be presented as evidence, they could still aid the defence in preparing for case management. The defence has already drafted the motion but requested additional time before formally filing it.
The presiding judge instructed that the motion be submitted and served on the prosecution once ready. In addition, the court ordered the accused to provide names and addresses of witnesses they plan to call if a prima facie case is established by the State.
The hearing has been adjourned to December 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., when the court will consider the defence’s application for additional disclosures.
