Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commenced his role as the Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group for the upcoming election in Bangladesh.

The former president announced his arrival to assume the role in a post shared on Facebook on the night of Sunday, February 8, 2026.

He indicated that his team would observe preparations towards the 2026 Bangladesh Parliamentary Election and Referendum, which would be held on February 12, 2026.

“Arrived in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group to observe pre-poll arrangements ahead of the country’s Parliamentary Election and Referendum on February 12.

“The group has met with representatives of the media, civil society, youth and women’s groups, political parties and other stakeholders,” he wrote.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was appointed to lead a 14-member Commonwealth Observer Group for Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections and a nationwide referendum by the Commonwealth.

The appointment was announced in London on January 21, 2026, by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, following a request from the Bangladesh Election Commission.

The mission will observe Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections, which will take place alongside a referendum on the July Charter, a post-uprising reform framework proposing major political and constitutional changes.
