Akufo-Addo Still Supports Bawumia, Says Former Deputy Minister
  • Former Deputy Defence Minister Kofi Amankwaa Manu has rejected claims that ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo has distanced himself from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid.
  • Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast TV, Manu insisted that Akufo-Addo remains committed to Bawumia’s candidacy, despite swirling speculation within the NPP ahead of the January 2026 primaries.

As the New Patriotic Party gears up for its presidential primaries in January 2026, speculation over internal alliances has intensified. One rumor gaining traction is that former President Nana Akufo-Addo may have quietly withdrawn his support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s presumed frontrunner.

But according to Kofi Amankwaa Manu, Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma and a longtime ally of Akufo-Addo, that narrative is false. Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast TV, Manu dismissed the claims as unfounded, asserting that Akufo-Addo has never wavered in his support for Bawumia.

Manu, who has worked closely with the former president since 2006, emphasized that if Akufo-Addo had changed his stance, he would have made it known publicly. He urged party members and the public to ignore hearsay and focus on the facts.

The remarks come amid a competitive race for the NPP flagbearer slot, with five candidates officially in the running: Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Bryan Acheampong. Recent surveys suggest Bawumia remains the most popular and viable candidate within the party.

As the primaries approach, the party faces growing pressure to maintain unity and transparency. Manu’s comments aim to quell internal tensions and reaffirm the continuity of support behind Bawumia’s bid.
