Alhaji Masawudu: Wontumi’s Arrest Is a Smoke Screen to Hide Government Secrets

Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the Third Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is part of a calculated political move by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Mahama.

Speaking on a weekend political show on Asempa FM on May 31, 2025, Masawudu described the arrest as a tactic to divert public attention from recent controversies involving Ghana’s Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

He explained that the government is trying to distract Ghanaians from critical questions about the Vice President’s recent medical trip to the United Kingdom on a private jet, and allegations surrounding the authenticity of her attending doctor.

“Instead of addressing the issues about the expensive chartered flight and the so-called fake doctor, the focus is shifted to Chairman Wontumi’s case,” Masawudu said during the interview.

Chairman Wontumi, who leads the NPP in the Ashanti Region, was arrested on allegations linked to illegal mining and financial misconduct. His detention has caused uproar, with some party supporters staging protests demanding his release.

So far, neither EOCO nor the government has released detailed information about the charges or the investigation’s progress.
