Ghana’s Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Magnus Kofi Amoatey, has presented his Letter of Credence to the President of that country, Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, at the African Union City in Kinshasa, to officially signal his assumption of duty in his role.

Mr Amoatey was among five persons who, on the day, presented their credentials as heads of their country’s mission in Kinshasa.

The other Ambassadors, who presented their credentials, were from Lebanon, Qatar and a Special Representative of the African Union.

Bilateral relations

Presenting his Letter of Credence, Mr Amoatey said Ghana stands firm and ready to enhance and strengthen the already cordial relations with the DR Congo as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s vision.

Ghana’s Ambassador said the Government of Ghana cherished the strong bilateral relations between the two countries, dating back to the DR Congo’s independence in 1960, when Ghana was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations.

He emphasised that already, the two countries have signed agreements on cooperation in areas such as agriculture, education, health and energy, as well as cooperating in various fronts, including peacekeeping, with Ghana contributing troops to the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the DRC.

Mr Amoatey further said the relations between the two countries were built on shared history and mutual interests, both with rich culture, similar traditions and influence in African music, and called for expansion and collaborative efforts to foster cross-cultural knowledge and understanding for mutual growth and development.

Ambassador Amoatey, a legal practitioner for over three decades, also served as a Member of Parliament for the Yilo Krobo Constituency from 2013 to 2017.

He was for 30 years the Director of Administration at the National Commission on Culture.

Support

Receiving the Letter of Credence,  Presiden Tshisekedi recounted what he described as the ‘leading and shining example of Ghana in the liberation struggle of African countries’ from the yoke of colonialism.

He said Ghana continues to influence the cause of democracy on the continent and pledged his country’s determination to strengthen the bonds between Congo and Ghana in all fields of endeavor even as the two countries shared common traditional and cultural heritage.

President Tshisekedi  said he fully supports President John Mahama’s call for deeper continental cooperation, emphasising that unity would bring Africa closer to its shared aspirations and transform them into tangible benefits for its citizens.
