Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States of America, H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, has paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the United States, H.E. Xie Feng, to discuss strengthened Ghana–China relations and avenues for expanded cooperation in key sectors of mutual interest.
The meeting, held at the Embassy of China in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, 30th December, 2025, also focused on Ghana’s participation in the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit, as well as emerging priorities in trade, the digital economy, infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, fishing, and people-to-people exchanges.
Ambassador Smith, who was warmly received by Ambassador Xie Feng, recalled the long-standing cordial relations between Ghana and China, stressing that both countries had significant opportunities to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
He underscored Ghana’s strategic relevance as an important partner in South–South cooperation, adding that sustained engagement between the two countries remained vital and should continue to be guided by mutual respect and shared development priorities.
Ambassador Smith described the October 2025 visit of President John Dramani Mahama to China as a strong signal of a renewed phase in bilateral cooperation anchored in shared progress, industrial advancement, and sustainable development.
The discussions between the two envoys also reviewed outcomes and prospects from Ghana’s engagement in the FOCAC Beijing Summit, with particular attention to exploring diversified collaboration and enhancing cooperation in mining, energy, infrastructure, agriculture and fishing.
Ambassador Smith expressed appreciation for China’s continued support and assistance to Ghana, reiterating Ghana’s interest in strengthening cooperation with China in areas including trade, digital innovation, infrastructure development, energy, mining and expanded people-to-people relations.
Ambassador Smith used the opportunity to brief his Chinese counterpart on President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, highlighting flagship initiatives such as the “24-Hour Economy” and the “Big Push” programme.
The meeting also touched on recent developments regarding illegal mining in Ghana, within the broader context of natural resource governance and sustainable development.
Ambassador Xie Feng congratulated Ambassador Smith on the presentation of his credentials to H.E. President Donald Trump.
