Veteran Ghanaian gospel singer Amy Newman has voiced concern over what she describes as the increasing commercialization of gospel music, cautioning that the genre risks losing its spiritual essence. She highlighted the growing trend of attention-driven performances and entertainment-focused content, arguing that gospel music should primarily serve as a ministry rather than a business venture.

Newman observed that while the new generation of gospel artists brings a fresh approach through formal musical training and professional skills, the core purpose of their work must remain rooted in spirituality. She expressed admiration for the combination of technical knowledge and ministry-minded artistry among young musicians but warned against blindly following trends from the secular music world.

The seasoned musician stressed that gospel music should be distinct in its mission, emphasizing its role in uplifting and blessing listeners rather than merely entertaining them. She noted that some performers appear more focused on gaining popularity and applause than delivering meaningful spiritual messages, a trend she believes could dilute the impact of gospel music nationwide.

As gospel music continues to evolve in Ghana, Amy Newman’s message underscores the need for artists to balance professional growth with their spiritual calling, ensuring the genre remains a powerful vehicle for faith and inspiration rather than just a commercial enterprise.
