Andre Onana has officially joined Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from Manchester United, marking a fresh start for the Cameroon international after a difficult spell in England.
The former Ajax and Inter Milan goalkeeper, 29, was greeted by hundreds of Trabzonspor supporters ahead of his official unveiling, highlighting the excitement surrounding his arrival. Reports indicate that the Turkish club will cover all of Onana’s wages, and he will also benefit from a signing-on fee and performance bonuses.
Manchester United confirmed the loan move, noting that Onana has made 102 appearances since joining from Inter Milan in July 2023. During his first season, he was part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Manchester City and played 50 matches in his second campaign.
Onana’s time at Old Trafford was marked by challenges, including limited starting opportunities under the new management and competition from Altay Bayindir. His only appearance this season came in a Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, where he was at fault for one of the goals.
Earlier this summer, Onana reportedly sought a pay rise at Manchester United, but the club’s acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp and his pre-season injury reduced his chances of game time. With the club prioritizing other goalkeepers, a loan move to Trabzonspor became the practical solution for both parties.
The goalkeeper joins Trabzonspor on a straight loan, aiming to rediscover his form and establish himself as the first-choice keeper, with the move offering more playing time and financial incentives than his stint at Old Trafford.
