AngloGold Ashanti has highlighted the growing contribution of women to the development of the mining sector during this year’s EmpowerHer Conference, organised to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The annual conference, which seeks to build the capacity of women and recognise outstanding female achievers, brought together staff of the company at Obuasi for a series of activities including a dinner and awards ceremony.

The event attracted female employees and leaders from across the company’s various departments, providing a platform to share experiences, discuss workplace challenges and explore strategies to strengthen women’s leadership and participation in the mining industry.

It also served as an avenue for mentorship, dialogue and inspiration among women within the organisation.

Participants used the gathering to reflect on the importance of creating opportunities for women to grow, lead and thrive in sectors traditionally dominated by men.

Address

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Samuel Boakye Pobee, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to gender equity and inclusive growth.

He stressed that both men and women deserved equal opportunities to excel in their professions.

Awards and recognition

As part of the celebration, awards were presented to 28 outstanding individuals in nine categories.

The honours recognised persons who have made notable contributions in areas such as education, entrepreneurship, professional excellence and community service.

The awards also celebrated individuals who have championed women-led businesses, supported students and provided leadership within their communities and public service.

The event formed part of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s broader efforts to promote diversity, inclusion and the advancement of women in both mining and community development.

Organisers said the conference also aimed to inspire the next generation of women to pursue leadership roles and professional excellence within the industry.
