Nana Poku Ashis stated in an interview with Graphic Showbiz monitored by News & Vibes that the academy and board members of Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) are incapable of selecting the greatest candidate for the award of Artiste of the Year because they do not completely understand the impact and significance of artists.
Expert artist manager and entertainment pundit urged the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) organizers to modify the Artiste of the Year category voting procedure. He said that public voting should be the only method used to decide who gets to keep the prestigious prize.
He claimed that because the general population is more aware of the influence of the artists’ music, they are best suited to choose the winner. The public is the ones who truly know which specific song was the largest hit in the year in question, he continued, therefore the Song of the Year should be decided similarly.
He went on to say that since some of the individuals on the board have been there for too long and they should rotate their positions from time to time. He said that it wasn’t novel because fresh perspectives weren’t brought in.
“The young generation is different. See, some of our old people do not understand what is going on now with the younger generation and the trends of music they are doing. So if you keep the same people on the board for too long, you’ll be frustrating most of new crop of artistes and the kind of productions they bring out,” he said.
As the Telecel Ghana Music Awards marks its 25th milestone anniversary, this year’s ceremony was a memorable one. Following in the footsteps of previous winners Black Sherif (2023), Kidi (2022), and Diana Hamilton (2021), a new crop of talented artists vied for the top honors.
Among them, Stonebwoy stood out for his remarkable achievements, including his extensive touring, philanthropic efforts, and impressive streaming numbers, making his Artiste of the Year win a well-deserved recognition of his hard work and dedication.
