During a courtesy visit by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the importance of making realistic promises to Ghanaians. He advised Dr. Bawumia to be truthful and acknowledge the shortcomings of his government, stressing that this would earn him the trust of the people.
“Make your message comprehensive and be real in your promises,” the Asantehene counseled. “No government can do all the work. Others will come and continue from where you left off. Acknowledge your shortcomings and tell Ghanaians you will continue from there.”
The Asantehene’s words of wisdom aim to guide Dr. Bawumia in his campaign promises, encouraging him to prioritize feasibility and reason in his message to the nation. By doing so, Dr. Bawumia can gain the trust of Ghanaians and build a strong foundation for his presidency.
Bawumia will face off against former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.
As the first Muslim from northern Ghana to lead the NPP, Dr. Bawumia breaks new ground in the party’s history. His achievement is further underscored by being the first vice-president to serve two full terms and then ascend to the leadership of the ruling party.
