Ashanti Region Targets Filth—116 Sanitation Offenders Face Court Action
  • Ashanti Regional authorities have intensified their campaign against poor sanitation, with 116 individuals currently facing legal action for violating environmental laws.
  • Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene made the announcement during a National Sanitation Day exercise, pledging stricter enforcement and surveillance to combat public health threats.

The Ashanti Region is stepping up its fight against environmental neglect, with 116 individuals now facing prosecution for breaching sanitation laws. The announcement came during a clean-up exercise led by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, part of activities marking National Sanitation Day on September 6.

The minister emphasized that the crackdown is far from over. With CCTV cameras now installed at key locations, authorities plan to monitor and penalize indiscriminate waste disposal more aggressively. The goal: to restore public hygiene and reduce health risks linked to poor sanitation.

In a related effort, a major clean-up operation is underway at the Afari Military Hospital, where overgrown weeds and debris are being cleared to prepare the facility for eventual use. The hospital’s opening, originally slated for September under the late Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah, has been delayed following the recent helicopter crash that disrupted timelines.

Dr. Amoakohene confirmed that his office has formally contacted the Defence Ministry to expedite the hospital’s operationalisation and is currently awaiting a response.

As the region tightens its grip on sanitation enforcement, residents are being urged to comply with by-laws or risk prosecution. The message is clear: the days of unchecked filth are numbered.
