The Presiding Member of the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District Assembly has raised serious concerns about Members of Parliament abandoning their local governance responsibilities. Napoleon Owusu Asante Ajei believes the growing habit of MPs failing to attend district assembly sittings requires urgent action to restore accountability.

He revealed that the constituency’s representative in Parliament, Lawrence Kwabena Agyinsam, has not made a single appearance at Assembly meetings since being elected in 2024. The Assembly had expected him to engage on critical matters including power supply challenges and the handling of the MP’s Common Fund, which some have claimed was distributed unfairly.

Addressing colleagues during the Assembly’s Fourth Ordinary Meeting in Hemang, Asante Ajei stressed that the Local Government Act 936 provides clear grounds for taking both administrative and legal measures against MPs who continuously avoid their duties. He warned that the Assembly would not hesitate to activate Section 234 of the Act if the current situation continues at the next sitting.

In a related development, District Chief Executive Patrick Fiable responded to a wave of online speculation suggesting that he misused the Disability Common Fund. He clarified that the transaction referenced in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report occurred under the previous administration and was used to support work on the Twifo-Hemang District Court while providing orientation for Assembly Members.

The DCE further disclosed that the district has received GH₵5,936,360.09 for the first two quarters as its portion of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund. Out of this allocation, financial assistance has already been extended to 60 persons with disabilities, with measures in place to ensure funds are used appropriately.
