Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, the Member of Parliament representing Asutifi North, has been hauled before the court following accusations that he interfered with a government-sanctioned crackdown on illegal mining activities near Bronikrom–Hwediem in the Ahafo Region.
The matter was disclosed in Parliament by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who explained that the legislator was invited to the CID Headquarters on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, where he reported alongside the Majority Chief Whip and his legal counsel. After going through the formal questioning process, he was charged and immediately escorted to court.
Ayariga confirmed the latest development, noting that the MP was already standing before a judge at the time he addressed Parliament.
The allegations stem from a confrontation on Saturday, November 1, 2025, when a task force from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) conducted a raid on unauthorized mining sites in the constituency. Youth in the community clashed with the team, reportedly resisting attempts to shut down the operations.
Security officials claim the MP encouraged the resistance, suggesting he played a key role in escalating the situation.
However, Addo has rejected the accusations, insisting he stepped in only to prevent chaos and protect community members from escalating tensions. According to him, his intention was to maintain peace rather than obstruct a lawful exercise.
