Isaac Adongo, chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, has hinted that Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson could emerge as a serious contender for the presidency if he continues his current approach to restoring Ghana’s economy.
In an interview, Adongo highlighted the significant backing Ato Forson receives from President Mahama, noting that such support is crucial for implementing tough economic decisions. According to Adongo, ministers without presidential backing often struggle to make the difficult choices necessary to stabilise the economy.
Although Ato Forson has not publicly expressed presidential ambitions, Adongo believes his record could position him favorably for future leadership. The MP for Bolgatanga Central praised Forson for renegotiating inherited contracts and tax deals, securing tangible benefits for the nation.
Adongo emphasised that Ato Forson’s focus on national interest and transparent financial governance has strengthened public confidence. He cited examples where the minister returned to Parliament to ensure renegotiated agreements received proper parliamentary approval, rather than unilaterally enforcing them, a move that reportedly saved Ghanaians millions of dollars.
According to Adongo, if Forson maintains his current path and commitment, he could be instrumental in winning the next elections for the National Democratic Congress, demonstrating a blend of strategic leadership and integrity in public service.
