A violent attack by a group of civilians against the Jacobu District Patrol team in the Ashanti Region has left one of the youth dead, with another severely injured.

The incident occurred at Bepotenten Sukuum in the Amansie Central District last Friday, after policemen recovered a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy during a patrol operation in the area.

Subsequently, the officers instructed the juvenile to inform the owner of the weapon to report to the police station with the appropriate documentation to account for possession of the firearm.

Police statement

A statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command dated January 24, 2026, said while returning from patrol, the team was confronted by a crowd of approximately 100 individuals blocking the road, armed with cutlasses and firearms.

The group assaulted officers and seized a service rifle.

It said in the resulting confrontation, the police shot the assailant who had taken the weapon and another was injured. The service rifle was successfully recovered.

“The Police Command would like to once again caution the public against attacks on our officers since perpetrators will be pursued and arrested to face the full rigours of the law”, the statement indicated.

Condolences

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and sympathised with all persons affected by this incident, saying “our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, and I wish them a speedy recovery”.

The minister, who also chairs the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), strongly urged all citizens to, at all times, cooperate fully with law enforcement officers and not disregard lawful orders.
