Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Abass Mohammed Ayamga has been sworn in as President of the Greater Accra JuJutsu Association, setting the tone for an ambitious four-year mandate anchored on grassroots expansion and national team development.

At a ceremony held at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium yesterday, DSP Ayamga took the oath of office under the supervision of National JuJutsu President, Maxwell Borquaye, alongside a new executive elected unopposed.

The team includes Nathaniel Kuditchar (Vice-President), Eric Quansah (2nd Vice-President), Grace Antonia Apia-Kweku (Secretary), Abdul Aziz Abdul Karim (Coach) and Enoch Peprah (Technical Director).

The oath was administered by Greater Accra Regional Sports Director, Albert Papa Asante, with oversight from key regional officials, including the Technical Director, James Odoi Wilson, the Assistant Technical Director, Cynthia Dotsey, and the Administrator, Joseph Ampoe.

Influential region

In his acceptance remarks, DSP Ayamga underscored Greater Accra’s strategic importance to the sport, noting that the region housed the majority of jujutsu clubs and athletes and continued to form the backbone of Ghana’s national team.

“This is a new chapter for jujutsu in Greater Accra. We are very committed to introducing and encouraging more people to join and take lessons on self-defence, which is the paramount aim of this sport,” he told the Daily Graphic.

Positioning self-defence as both a life skill and an entry point into the sport, the new president outlined an aggressive development blueprint centred on schools.

National championships

The new administration will be thrust straight into action, having been mandated by the national body to host the national championships at the D.G. Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, April 18.

The one-day competition will feature clubs from Ashanti, Bono, Volta and Northern regions, alongside a strong Accra contingent of about four clubs.

Beyond regional bragging rights, the championships carry high stakes, with standout performers expected to earn selection into the national team ahead of upcoming international assignments.
