President of the Ga-Adangbe Association, Nii Ayikoi Otoo
President of the Ga-Adangbe Association, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, has urged government to consider naming Ghana’s main international airport after a distinguished Ga chief or prominent Ga personality, rather than adopting the proposed name Accra International Airport.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Nii Ayikoi Otoo revealed that consultations are already underway within the Ga community to identify a suitable individual whose legacy would reflect the history and identity of Accra’s indigenous people.
According to him, discussions involving civil society organisations and traditional leaders have begun, with plans to formally present a proposal to government once a consensus is reached.
“Our people, together with civil society organisations, have started discussions about identifying a Ga chief or a prominent Ga person for this monument. The process is ongoing, and in due course, we will present a paper,” he said.
FLASHBACK: Why Kotoka was killed by his colleague coup leaders
Nii Ayikoi Otoo noted that the current name, Kotoka International Airport, has become increasingly controversial over the years, prompting renewed calls for change.
He argued that the renaming process presents an opportunity to recognise the Ga people, on whose land the capital city sits.
He pointed to Kumasi’s airport, which bears the named after Prempeh I, as an example of how indigenous leadership has been honoured elsewhere, adding that Accra deserves similar recognition.
In the meantime, the government has signalled its intention to proceed with renaming the facility.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga announced during a leadership media briefing in Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, that plans are underway to change the airport’s name from Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport.
The announcement, made on the resumption of the second session of the 9th Parliament, has since sparked wide public debate, with calls for broader consultation on what the new name should represent.
