Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has officially filed his nomination to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general election — and he didn’t hold back.
Addressing party supporters at the NPP headquarters in Accra on August 28, 2025, the former Vice President made pointed remarks that appeared to target his contenders in the race. Without naming names, Bawumia warned that choosing anyone else as flagbearer would risk deepening inequality within the party.
He described the upcoming primaries as a battle for the soul of the NPP, urging delegates to reject candidates who flaunt wealth and focus instead on proven leadership. Bawumia positioned himself as a results-driven figure, touting his record as Vice President and his role in implementing key policy initiatives.
“I don’t lead with noise or money,” he said, “I lead with results.”
His comments come as the flagbearer race draws in several high-profile contenders, including:
- Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum — MP for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education
- Dr Bryan Acheampong — MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture
- Kennedy Agyapong — former MP for Assin Central
- Kwabena Agyapong — former NPP General Secretary
- Boakye Agyarko — former Minister of Energy
The primaries are scheduled for January 31, 2026, and are expected to be one of the most competitive in the party’s history. Bawumia’s remarks have already stirred internal debate, with some viewing them as a strategic move to frame the contest around values rather than influence.
