Fresh polling data from Global InfoAnalytics, led by Mussa Dankwah, indicates that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has become the preferred candidate for New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters across various constituencies in the Central Region as the 2028 presidential race begins to take shape.
The findings, published on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, on the Facebook page of the polling firm’s Executive Director, reveal strong backing for the former Vice President, even in territories long seen as strongholds for his political rivals.
One of the biggest surprises came from Assin Central, where Kennedy Agyapong, a former MP for the area and a notable figure within the NPP, appears to be losing ground. Despite his roots and influence there, the poll shows Dr. Bawumia receiving 68.5% of local support, leaving Agyapong with just 30.1%. Other names on the poll such as Patric Boamah and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum trailed far behind with 0.0% and 1.4%, respectively.
In other parts of the region, similar trends are observed. In Mfantseman, Bawumia garnered 48.8% compared to Agyapong’s 40.9%. Ekumfi was the only constituency where Agyapong edged ahead, earning 51.0% versus Bawumia’s 49.0%. In Cape Coast North, Bawumia pulled ahead again with 56.2% support.
The poll also tested support in other constituencies such as Agona East, Agona West, and Upper Denkyira West, consistently showing Dr. Bawumia ahead in most areas.
While Kennedy Agyapong was once seen as a major contender after a strong performance in the 2024 NPP primaries, the latest figures suggest that enthusiasm for his presidential ambitions may be waning, even in his own backyard.
Other potential candidates in the poll—including Bryan Acheampong, Peter Amewu, Abena Osei Asare, and Kwabena Agyapong—recorded minimal support across the surveyed areas, indicating a dominant two-horse race between Bawumia and Agyapong.
As the NPP gears up for internal contest ahead of the 2028 elections, the regional pulse from the Central Region is likely to play a key role in shaping the momentum of the flagbearer hopefuls.
