The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla and former Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has expressed firm confidence that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge victorious in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary currently underway across the country.
Speaking to journalists at a polling centre in Bimbilla, Mr Nitiwul said he was convinced Dr Bawumia would secure a decisive nationwide victory and be declared the party’s presidential candidate. He added that the outcome would allow the party to quickly regroup and focus on the task ahead.
“I know that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will win across the country, be declared the candidate-elect, and then the party will formally come together to ensure that everything moves forward,” he stated.
Mr Nitiwul also appealed for unity within the party, urging members to rally behind whoever emerges as winner.
He described the voting process in Bimbilla as peaceful, transparent and well organised, noting assurances from security agencies and Electoral Commission officials that the exercise had been incident-free.
According to him, arrangements at the polling centre were clearly communicated to delegates, including the use of two voting streams to manage the more than 900 voters expected, despite the exercise being held at a single polling station.
“I’m happy that we have witnessed a very democratic process. It has been fair and clean, and I don’t expect anyone to complain. If the entire country reflects what we have seen here, then everyone should accept the results and we will unite as a party,” he said.
The Bimbilla MP stressed that the NPP’s real challenge lies beyond its internal contest, calling on members to remain focused on their collective political objective.
“Our common opponent is not ourselves; it is the ruling government. We must present ourselves to the people of Ghana as a united party,” he added.
Mr Nitiwul commended NPP election officials, the Electoral Commission and the security agencies for their roles in ensuring a smooth exercise, expressing optimism that the calm atmosphere would be maintained through the counting and declaration of results.
Voting has since closed at all designated polling centres nationwide, with counting and collation of ballots currently underway under tight security and in the presence of party agents and observers.
Five aspirants are contesting the race: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
